Harvest Report 2024
Most South African wine regions had an excellent winter season with sustained low temperatures and high rainfall. Spring was earlier than usual, with the first bud breaks around 10 days earlier than the previous season; however, in late Sept we were hit with torrential downpours and strong winds. The accompanying floods damaged infrastructure and made vineyards on clay soils inaccessible.
Despite the unique challenges in spring, we were very optimistic on the quality of the fruit. As usual, our harvest commenced with the Maritime block of Chenin Blanc in late January. February was characterised by multiple heat waves which accelerated the ripening process and our entire harvest was "concertina-ed" into a mere 4.5 weeks.
The 2024 harvest was characterized by small bunches, small berries, and a significantly smaller crop, but it holds a lot of potential, and we are super amped to track the development of the wines in the coming months. Despite the challenging conditions and dramatic weather, we are happy to report that 2024 has been a successful harvest. As winegrowers, we always try and adhere to that old-timey saying; “Cows don't give you milk, you have to take it from them”.
